"Way back in the days when the grass was still green
and the pond was still wet
and the clouds were still clean,
and the song of the Swomee-Swans rang out in space...
one morning, I came to this glorious place."

Rastaman Vibrations at the Music Farm
May 15, 2008 – 11:07 am
Stephen’s been my favorite Marley son since 1996, when at 15 years old I turned on the Grammys to watch the Fugees perform. 21 at the time, he came out draped in a rasta flag and jumped around all over the stage for the highest energy version of “No Woman, No Cry” I’d ever heard.

Reggae Block Party moves to Marion Square
May 6, 2008 – 9:52 am
I was pretty surprised to see this in a Piccolo Spoleto email this morning. The block parties on the steps of the Customs House have been a tradition for years. Even though I love the feel of being on the harbor, the sight of the massive Customs House steps covered in hundreds of dancing people, […]
Groovy new art at J. Paulz
May 5, 2008 – 3:28 pm
Local artist Janelle Riolo is putting on an art show tomorrow night at J. Paulz on Maybank Highway. I went to her show last year and was duly impressed by the quality and bright, alive nature of her paintings. She’s promised a sweet playlist to accompany the viewing, mingling, and sipping.
Is Will Ferrell just greenwashing?
May 5, 2008 – 2:24 pm
Just when I thought I’d vomit if I heard the word “green” again (at least in quotation marks like I’ve just done here), I saw this video. Put the earmuffs on your kids for this one - there’s some big boy language.

Pet Helpers is full
April 30, 2008 – 3:10 pm
I’m going to post this entire letter we received from Pet Helpers’ Emily Laurie yesterday. I got the numbers used in the story from an employee. We’ve smoothed things over with them, but apparently a lot of folks have tried to take them dogs this week after reading the article. I disagreed with her that […]
LSD discoverer dies at age 102
April 30, 2008 – 2:50 pm
Albert Hoffman, the scientist who first isolated the chemical LSD, passed away yesterday.
Jambase.com published Erowid.com’s story about him, and the comments that ensued are hilarious.
Read them here. Favorites …

Party to promote commercial recycling tomorrow - Open Bar!
April 25, 2008 – 12:37 pm
I just got this email and don’t know more about it, so I’m posting in full. Sounds fun. The organizer stressed the importance of RSVPing.
Come to this fundraiser this weekend to help subsidize recycling on the commercial level on the peninsula. It’s downtown in a phat house on Charles St. (off St. Phillips), […]

Furbabies from Texas + Dog Show, Shih Tzu Fundraiser, Pet Expo info
April 23, 2008 – 2:39 pm
That’s Nick the Shih Tzu. He was rescued from a puppy mill in Lexington County, and currently lives with his foster mom here in Charleston. You can read all about him and puppy mills in my story here.
Just after the paper went to press, we got word that the judge in Texas referenced in […]
Butts Out on the Beach? — Folly Beach considering a smoking ban
April 23, 2008 – 10:35 am
Last week, Folly Beach City Councilman Dave Stormer sent out a draft ordinance of a smoking ban to the other members of Council. The item will likely be on the agenda at Council’s May 27 meeting, just as North Charleston, the only other major municipality in the county without a ban, debates their own.
“I’m […]
