A church in Oklahoma planned to give away an AR-15 assault rifle at a big youth conference this week. They canceled the promotion after it got local TV press, but are saving the gun to give out next year.
That’s the most creative method of soul-savin’ I’ve heard in awhile. All I ever got was free pizza.

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.
Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event’s organizers was unable to attend. The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, said it’s a way of trying to encourage young people to attend the event. The church expected hundreds of teenagers from as far away as Canada.
“We have 21 hours of preaching and teaching throughout the week,” Ross said.

Calling the rifle in question “automatic” when the quoted text shows “semiautomatic” is pretty misleading.
But, in true journalistic fashion, don’t let the facts get in the way of a good headline, eh?
Thanks Rustmeister. I couldn’t tell you the difference.
In all honesty, what difference does it make if it’s semiautomatic or automatic? I don’t think it makes any difference to the headline. It could just say “Guns for God.” The point is it’s a church giving away a gun to teenagers, which is just weird.
The difference being is that automatic=machine gun and semi-automatic=regular rifle. Pesky facts.
Semi-automatic rifles are also commonly known as self-loading rifles (’SLR’) or auto-loading rifles. In some contexts, the term “automatic rifle” may refer to a semi-automatic/SLR rifle. Further, many semi-automatic-only versions (also known as “sporting” or “civilian” versions) of fully automatic rifles are available, and their external appearance can be nearly identical to their automatic counterparts.
I’m just sayin’.
