And there’s plenty of vino and a keg of Palmetto on tap from 5 - 7 this afternoon at the City Gallery. So I’m truckin’ to get out of the office in time. Here’s what I wrote about it on the buzz-o-meter.

What is it? Piccolo’s annual juried art show/competition, creatively themed Vanishing Landscapes.

Why see it? With our environment in the crosshairs of the American lifestyle, the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs decided to recruit the Coastal Conservation League for this year’s show. In a first for the exhibition, they’ve given it a theme: the importance of maintaining our fragile ecosystem and the current state of our planet and environment. The works include two- and three-dimensional pieces and photography.

Who should go? Less than a quarter of the entries received made it into this year’s show, juried by Dr. Mokhless Al-Hariri. What remains is literally a best-of-the-best among local and national artists, and should not be missed.

PICCOLO SPOLETO • Free • On view through June 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., daily • City Gallery at Waterfront Park, 34 Prioleau St. • (888) 374-2656

Here’s what the city has to say…

This year’s theme will showcase works of South Carolina artists in two dimensions, three dimensions, and photography related to the state of our planet and its environment. Some of SC’s finest artists have created works in the show addressing these issues. Their works confront problems of climate change, disappearing wetlands, air and water quality, the effects on wildlife due to vanishing habitats, and the like. The exhibit will also feature the creation of a Tibetan Sand Mandala and a unique site specific installation and related documentary called Ten Trees (see Piccolo Spoleto program book page 81 or visit www.piccolospoleto.com for more information). If you love your Mother (Earth), then don’t miss this show.

See you there!
