Here’s a press release from the Alliance for Planet Earth at the College of Charleston.
Charleston, S.C. – On April 1, 2008, conservation groups and students from College of Charleston will participate in an international day of action to raise awareness about climate change. Participants will also call for a halt to Santee Cooper’s dirty coal plant on the Great Pee Dee River.
By dressing in clown outfits, waving signs and handing out “coal plants”, the group hopes to address the ridiculousness of the nation’s fossil fuel dependence. Guest speakers and volunteers will discuss the absurdity of building a technologically outdated coal plant in South Carolina when energy independent is possible through efficiency and renewable sources like wind, solar, and biomass.
“The public needs to understand the harmful environmental, social, and health effects of coal and that clean alternatives are available”, states Carly Sothoron, a senior at College of Charleston and member of the student group Alliance for Planet Earth (APE). “When given the option between an energy source that creates jobs, reduces our dependence on foreign oil, minimizes environmental impacts and meets projected energy needs or one that does not, which one would you choose?” asks Nikki Seibert, Green Building Coordinator for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity and Graduate Student at the College of Charleston.
Other groups participating in Fossil Fools Day include the Energy Action Coalition, Rising Tide, the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, the Australian Student Environment Network, and the Australian Youth Climate Coalition.
