The South Carolina Fishing Report recently launched a website and weekly update, and it’s a pretty useful tool for catch-it-yourselfers. They rely on reports from local fishermen, and have an active message board at their site. Sign up for the weekly emails here.
Reports cover fresh and saltwater all over the state. Here’s Charleston…
Spottail Bass: Good. Spottails are scattered from deep holes in rivers through the creeks, ICW, inlets, and out to near shore reefs. Inshore fishermen also report a hot bite for redfish schooled up on the flats. A variety of methods are working but the bite is definitely on.
Trout: Very good. Nice catches of trout are being reported north of Charleston in the creeks around Dewees, Capers, and Bull Island as water temperatures rise. Fish were hitting DOA shrimp on popping corks near low tide and ½ ounce bucktails with DOA shrimp trailers. After a good weekend fishing was slower on windy Monday but some fish were again caught in the holes on chartreuse bucktails with DOA shrimp trailers.
Flounder: Fair. Some doormat flounder are being caught at the nearshore reefs using traditional flounder baits.
Sheepshead: Good. Sheepshead are schooled up at the nearshore reefs.
Bottom Fish: Very good. Black sea bass, grouper, and snapper are all biting offshore. Black sea bass are biting well in 40-70 feet of water and grouper are biting well from 60-70 feet on out to 150 feet. Fishermen using cigar minnows are also picking up some nice cobia.
Bluewater Offshore: Good catches of Little Tunny from 15-20 pounds are being reported offshore as well as some bonito.
