Deputy cleared in shooting incident
Authorities have cleared a Charleston County deputy following the July shooting of an armed man after a brief chase.
Deputy Shawn P. James was allowed to return to work Sept. 20, sheriff’s Maj. John Clark said. The decision followed an opinion from 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson a day earlier in which she found that James faced a life-threatening situation and was justified in using deadly force.
The incident began about 7:30 p.m. July 6 when James tried to stop a sport utility vehicle on Savannah Highway near Ponderosa Drive and chased it into the Melrose subdivision.
Kendall Cohen, 28, stopped the SUV, got out armed with a shotgun and handgun and ran, authorities said at the time. James gave chase. The two got to Menola Avenue, where Cohen pointed the handgun and the deputy shot him in the leg.
Cohen remained at the Charleston County jail Monday on $276,270 bail.
He was charged with 12 offenses, including assault and battery with intent to kill, failure to stop for a blue light and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.
The “Summer Augmentation Plan” that brought county cops like James to Folly is over now, but we’ll look forward to him keeping us safe from bicyclists and J-walkers next June.

Nice, now he can get back to spying into cars for beercans and arresting people walking home from the bar! I gues, at least he’s not watching dvd’s on laptops in his squadcar or taking 2hr lunchbreaks at jason’s deli.
