Tough choice for music lovers tonight, as two unique, original bands play, one west of the Ashley, the other east of the Cooper.

If you haven’t heard Great Northern, listen here. Their debut LP, Trading Twilight for Daylight is pop proper, with pretty harmonies and the always intriguing band make-up of two guys and two girls. They play at the Village Tavern around 10.

Over at the Pour House, there’s an Afrolachian boogie going down with Toubab Krewe. A friend called me before their show last fall and told me I had to go. Exhausted from some other PoHo concert the night before, I somehow made it, and night two far overshadows the first in memory. Toubab are incredible. Percussion-driven and led by a kora, they are impossible not to dance to.

I’m going to Toubab. My friend’s birthday party is right behind the Pour House so it’s perfect. But I’m seeking out another Great Northern show soon.
