Across America, cities and towns will be blaring “I’m Proud to be an American” during the grand finale of their fireworks displays this Wednesday, but only North Charleston will have the real deal.![]()
Here’s the announcement from Mayor Summey. . .
Come and join North Charleston at the Riverfront Park for our July 4th & City’s 35th Anniversary Celebration starting at 3 p.m. With concerts, family activities and a fireworks show, there will be fun for everyone. All activities are FREE. The musical lineup includes Rivers & Company (Jazz/R&B), Charleston Community Band (Pop & Patriotic), Makeno Son (Latin), and The Coopertones (Beach Music). The celebration will be brought to a close with a two hour performance by the legendary Lee Greenwood with fireworks over the Cooper River.
I can’t help but be reminded of the Greenwood head shot that used to hang in former City Paper staff writer Bill Davis’ office, signed, “To Bill, I take it back. I’m not proud to be an American. Lee Greenwood.”
But I’m sure he still is. There’s money in pride when your name’s Greenwood. I wonder what N. Chuck is forking over for the singing patriot.

Ha! I fake-signed that photo for Bill back in the day!
I read in the P&C that North Charleston was forking out 40 grand for the Greenwood set. They could have booked Plane Jane fifty times for that kind of bread!
