Good news from Washington. . .

Last week the Senate voted to substantially increase the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard of American cars and trucks to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. We already have the technology to do that (or better), but it’s a step. The bill still has to pass the House.

Unfortunately, a national renewable energy standard promoting the use of clean energy sources was blocked by a group of opposing senators. It would have required power utilities to produce 15 percent of their power from clean sources by 2022. Supporters will try and include it as an amendment.

Meanwhile in the House, bill HR 969, calling for 20 percent renewable electricity by 2020,  has 117 cosponsors and will be voted on this week.
